A Not-so-spooky Tale: My New Handmade Business!

I've written a bit on the blog about some of what I've been up to of late, employment-wise. In addition to working on launching an education-related venture (which I'll probably not be blogging here about at all), I've been working hard to start a proper handmade business. My enjoyment of making things is one of my favorite things in life and I've long wanted to take that from "hobby" to "lifestyle." In the late summer I got myself registered officially as self-employed, and in the meantime have been slowly building up a stock.

As it's Halloween, a day of tales that are sometimes spooky, and fairytales (in their original tellings) were usually a bit off-kilter, it seemed a good day to introduce you to Grimm 188!

My goal is to be able to share my handwovens, handknits, and other fiber-based creations at craft fairs in London and beyond on a fairly regular basis. I had my hopes dashed at getting accepted into any of the "big name" Christmas craft shows here this season, but I'm sure once I've gotten my feet a bit wet, it'll be easier next time!

Right now my shop on Etsy has a sampling of my creations from handwoven scarves...

...to sweet, soft knit baby blankets....

(yes, I know I need a better photo spot for blankets than my couch)

...to fun, funky friendship bracelets with clasps. A bit more grown-up and wearable for those of us past summer camp age!

(husbands who will be your wrist model are the best kind of husbands)

I do plan to expand my offerings, with a focus on beautiful fabrics and such. In addition to the Etsy shop, I've also started a Grimm 188 Instagram to share in-the-making photos and other things that might not be on my personal stream.

I would love to know what sort of handmade fiber-y things you'd be interested in seeing and do hope you'll think of my shop as you begin any seasonal gift-shopping! It's a great new adventure and I have such hope for it to do well!

Happy Halloween, friends!

Instalife: California wrap-up

The vacation is over. We have returned home.

I thought about doing the usual monthly-ish Instalife post, but so much happened and was documented on our trip that I decided on a little video collection instead.

More photos and stories soon.

Two years!

Two years under our belt. Two countries lived in. More cakes than can be counted. Not enough holidays away together. But we're on one now as this post goes up! In the country where we got hitched ourselves (if not anywhere within a thousand miles of the place).  A lot of yarn in my hands, a lot of controllers in your hands. An increasing amount of stuff surrounding us...

It's been a wild ride. Admittedly the first year was the craziest and full of experiences that I'm quite happy to never have to repeat in my life! But the second one has been lovely in the calmness and excellent in the fun bits.

Here's to another trip around the sun! I couldn't wish for a better co-pilot.

Instalife: The Month that Was

I suppose we're now soundly in October. As you're reading this, I've already arrived (knock on wood) in California for some family time, my brother's wedding, and a little anniversary holiday combined! It's not quite the same as getting home to Wisconsin, but at least I'll get to spend time with my family regardless.

September was a bit busy and a lot exciting.

Science lady Lego // Almost meeting Helen Mirren and attending the gala screening of "The Hundred Foot Journey //
Shiny shiny nails // DirtyBurger

Green smoothies now and then // Unseen plot twists //
Meeting a giant squirrel! // Scotland voted on independence

ALLOFTHEBAKING // I won the "traybake" category of the Wandsworth Bakeoff! //
The Handmade Fair with Kirstie Allsopp (& Paul A. Young)

Knotting and chaining // adventures in dinner //
relaxation // the best chocolates in London, and probably the world.

Weaving, weaving, weaving // making button badges for BCUK //
a taping of "Mock the Week" // the best new cookie cutter set

October has started off with gusto. It's been an amazing last week, so I have high hopes for the rest of this month. I might be quieter on social media and the blog while I'm stateside, but I hope to have stories to share when I get back!

Not Quite Going to The Woods

Somehow my August less blogging turned into September no-blogging-at-all. Which was weird. Very weird. But also ok. I've been stepping back from the blog overall of late, from posting, but also from reading other blogs as much. I certainly don't plan to give blogs up, but I've just been doing some other things. Exploring what I'm about.

Lots of fiber-based stuff has been happening as I try to really make the idea of earning with handmade work. The loom is in fairly constant motion and my hands also find needles & yarn and needles & thread between them. It keeps me busy in a good way.

September was also dominated by the final push of planning for BlytheCon UK. I was a planner again this year - in a team as opposed to mostly solo as in 2011. It was a blast. I'll share photos soon! Mostly I just can't wait til next year to do it again except even bigger and even better!

So there it is. Life keeps happening even if I don't write about it as regularly. Tomorrow life will have me up before dawn and on a plane across both an ocean and a continent. It will be a long and tiring day, but at the end of it, I'll see family and prepare for a couple weeks of celebrations and relaxation. I'm looking forward to the adventure.
